We wanted to visit Piedras Rojas long before the actual trip to South America. On arrival to town San Pedro de Atacama, we bought a guided tour.
The tour also included visiting an Atacama salt lake, couple of mountain lakes with flamingos, vulcans and small town for food break.
San Pedro de Atacama has a lot of tour companies and you can choose, but choose wisely.
The way to Piers Rojas.
All the way to red stones the nature is gorgeous and worth to see by it’s own.
We saw a lot of wild animals and asked the driver to stop the car.
On the way we’ve stopped several times to check out wild foxes and vicunas.
We moved out at 7:50 (but the tour supposed to start at 7:00).
We were driven to a small town in an hour-drive from San Pedro de Atacama and had a very basic but nice breakfast – jam, bread, eggs, cheese and coca tea. After the breakfast we went to the first interest point – an ancient indian road in the Chilean desert.
After 20 minutes of drive of minivan stopped on the way up. The car refused to move forward and we had to wait for other car.
While waiting, we decided to check out a canion that we’ve pass 500 minutes ago.
It was a great walk – with awesome views of the small river and mountains.
After spending 1 hour in the canyon we came back, where a new car was waiting for us.
We saw different lakes, vulcan, lots of flowers, vast desert with many little plants, salt lake and out-of-this world red rocks.
The price of this trip was $40 per person. It includes 2 meals, transportation, english-guided tour of 5-7 places. Pick-up time is 7 and drop off is 16:30, but we came back at 21:00.
Because of the malfunction of the car, our time shifted and we arrived at the salt lake on the sunset, which was great.
We were exited with this trip, which was a warm-up before the 3-day trip to Uiuni which started next day.
Piedras Rojas is a nature’s masterpiece. Lots of bright colors put you in state of feeling yourself in a fairytale. Despite strong wind, it’s the place the stay for couple days.
